When someone nearby searches for what you offer, the businesses in that little map at the top get the calls. Local SEO is how you get there, and how you stay there.

We optimise your Google Business Profile, clean up your listings across the web, and build a review strategy. We also target the suburbs you actually serve, so locals find you before your competitors.

Why the map pack is the only result that matters.

Search for a plumber, a dentist or a cafe near you and look at what Google actually shows. A map, then three businesses with star ratings, opening hours and a call button. That block is the map pack, and on a phone it occupies most of the first screen. The ordinary blue links start below it.

This has two consequences that most Brisbane businesses haven't internalised. The first is that ranking fourth in the map pack is closer to ranking nowhere than to ranking third. The fourth result is behind a "more places" tap that most people never make. The second is that local rankings are not the same as organic rankings. They're calculated differently and they change independently. A business can sit at position two in the map pack while being invisible in the results underneath. For most local service businesses, that's a perfectly good outcome.

Google decides the three on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance you can't change. The other two you can.

What actually moves local rankings.

A complete Google Business Profile. Not just claimed. Finished. The right primary category. That is the single highest-leverage field on the whole profile, and the one most often set wrong. Every service listed. Real opening hours, including public holidays. Photos that aren't stock. A description that reads like a business, not a keyword list.

Reviews, and replies to them. Volume, recency and rating all count. So does responding. It's a visible signal to Google. It's a much stronger one to the person deciding between you and the business next to you. A steady trickle of reviews beats a burst of twenty, which looks exactly like what it is.

Consistent details everywhere. Your name, address and phone number should be identical across your website, your profile and the Australian directories that matter. One place says "Suite 3/45 Smith St". Another says "Unit 3, 45 Smith Street". That is exactly the kind of ambiguity that makes Google less confident about showing you.

Pages about the places you serve. Say you cover Chermside, Carindale and Ipswich. A single page saying "servicing greater Brisbane" competes poorly against businesses with a real page for each. Not doorway pages with the suburb swapped. Genuinely different pages about genuinely different areas.

A website Google trusts. The map pack and organic results aren't independent. A fast, well-structured site with local schema markup lifts the profile alongside it.

How long it takes, and what it costs.

Local SEO is the fastest-moving work in search. A profile that has never been properly set up can improve within two to six weeks. A lot of that gain comes from simply completing fields that were left empty. Competitive suburbs and crowded categories take longer. Reaching the top three can take three to six months. It may not be reachable at all against businesses that have been collecting reviews for a decade.

Local SEO is included in our SEO retainers from $1,290 a month. If the profile is all you need, standalone Google Business Profile management starts at $290 a month. That covers optimisation, weekly posts and review generation.

One honest caveat. If your business has no physical presence in the area you want to rank for, local SEO has a ceiling. Google is increasingly good at working out where you actually are. A virtual office address is a risk to the whole listing rather than a shortcut.

Working in a specific part of the city? We've written up how local search behaves in North Lakes. A fast-growing catchment there means the competitive set turns over constantly. We've done the same for Wynnum and Manly, where the bayside geography changes which suburbs are realistically worth targeting.

Five mistakes we see constantly.

The wrong primary category. Take a business that installs and repairs air conditioners. Listed under "Air conditioning contractor" instead of "HVAC contractor", it can be invisible for half the searches it should win. The same applies in reverse. It's one dropdown and it outweighs almost everything else on the profile.

Keyword-stuffing the business name. "Smith Plumbing: Emergency Plumber Brisbane 24/7" is against Google's guidelines. Competitors can and do report it, and the penalty is suspension of the listing entirely. The short-term lift is not worth losing the profile.

Asking for reviews all at once. Twenty reviews in a week after eighteen months of nothing is a pattern Google notices. Ask every customer, every week, as a habit. It's slower and it actually works.

Letting the details drift. A phone number changed on the website but not on the profile. Or a suburb listed three different ways across directories. Each inconsistency is small; together they make Google less certain you are who you say you are.

Treating it as a set-and-forget job. Profiles decay. Hours go stale over Christmas, and competitors add photos and posts. Google occasionally applies user-suggested edits to your listing without telling you. Someone needs to look at it more than once a year.

FAQ

Common questions.

What is the Google Map Pack?

The Map Pack is the block of three local businesses shown with a map. Google puts it at the top for local searches. Ranking there is one of the highest-value positions for any local business.

How do I rank higher in Google Maps?

It comes down to an optimised Google Business Profile, consistent citations across the web, genuine reviews, and locally relevant content. We manage all of it as one campaign.

Do reviews really affect my rankings?

Yes. The quantity, quality, and recency of your Google reviews are a significant local ranking factor. They also strongly influence whether people choose you.

How long does local SEO take?

Google Business Profile improvements can show within weeks. Competitive Map Pack rankings usually build over two to four months of consistent work.

What does local SEO cost in Brisbane?

Local SEO is included in our SEO retainers from $1,290 a month. If the Google Business Profile is all you need, standalone management starts at $290 a month. That covers optimisation, weekly posts and review generation.

Can I rank in a suburb where I have no address?

In the map pack, not reliably. Distance from the searcher is a ranking factor you cannot change. A virtual office address risks suspension of the listing entirely. You can rank in ordinary organic results for those suburbs with genuine service-area pages, which is the honest route.

Why did my Google Business Profile rankings drop?

Common causes are a category changed by a user-suggested edit, or details that no longer match your website. It can also be a competitor who started collecting reviews properly, or a Google local algorithm update. It is almost always diagnosable, and worth checking before assuming a penalty.
